Art and Design & Design Technology

At Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred we teach Design Technology ensuring the children can go through the design process from understanding design brief to evaluating the end product. In Art they will learn about a skill or an artist, produce an idea for their final piece, create it and then evaluate it.

We recognise and acknowledge different ways of learning. We know that visual arts provide opportunities for different types of learners to experience their visual environment from the world around them.

We have very high expectations of what children can achieve in Art and Design and Design Technology. Our ultimate aim is to inspire expressive, independent individuals who journey forwards, making their mark on the world as confidently as they do on paper with a paintbrush, pen or pencil.

Art

Art covers many disciplines and it underpins our core values of Community, Resilience, Teamwork, Responsibility and Respect.  Art and Design provides a way of enabling a child to make mistakes, which promotes children using their problem solving skills.  These skills are celebrated and allows for experimentation to discover something new, or to ignite their imagination.

The teaching of Art and Design, involves teaching skills and concepts in an inclusive, inspiring, engaging and relevant way.  The process of making art is just as relevant as a finished piece of artwork and this allows scope for further opportunities for development and for children to reflect and develop methods of revisiting works, or using art pieces as a point of reference.

Children see before they speak, make marks before they write, build before they walk but the children’s ability to appreciate and interpret these things is influenced by the quality of their art, craft and design education. That is why Art has been integrated into our broad and balanced curriculum so that we can teach it to a high standard. All of the artwork that the children will create is linked to the different books that they will be reading in each topic. The children will gain various skills by being exposed to different art media throughout the school e.g. printing, sculpture, painting, weaving, drawing and collage. The curriculum has been revised so that it is be fully inclusive of all of the changes in the new National Curriculum.

Design Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, our pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The children cover a wide range of skills from learning how to sew textiles to cooking food products. The Design and Technology curriculum has been updated to make sure that it follows the new National Curriculum so that the new skills are covered.

Cooking and Nutrition

Cooking and Nutrition is taught alongside Design Technology when the children have to design and make a food product for a client. We have also planned in opportunities when the children can cook for festivals or special occasions for example, Diwali, Christmas or bonfires night. We feel it is vitally important that all of the children know about healthy eating, where our food comes from and how to cook as these are skills that they will need all throughout life.
