Modern Foreign Language

At Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hunded we believe that it is important that all children are given the opportunity to learn a foreign language.

Children in KS2 are given the opportunity to learn Mandarin and Latin. All learning is heavily based on real-world themes so that children can take part in role-play and performance so that it can be embedded into the everyday life of the academy.

Pupils in Year 3 and 4 are taught Mandarin through specailist teachers, fluent in the language. The children use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement with Mandarin, to develop a positive approach to languages and to develop an understanding of different cultures.

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils receive Latin from a specialist teacher who we share with Harris Academy Chafford Hundred. The children explore the history and culture of Latin and link their English grammar knowledge into the structures and roots of the language of Latin.
